389-Cubic-Inch Tri-Power V8, 5-Speed Manual, First-Year Model
THIS… is a 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible, finished in Grenadier Red with an Ivory soft top and a black interior. This GTO’s factory-fitted 3-speed manual transmission has been replaced by a TREMEC 5-speed manual. Serial numbers pictured in the gallery indicate that the Tri-Power V8 is original to this GTO. A partial list of notable currently installed equipment reported by the seller includes power steering, 14-inch wheels, front bucket seats, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The original GTO is arguably the first true American muscle car. Pontiac wanted to release a more powerful version of the Tempest, but parent company General Motors had a 330-cubic-inch limit on engine displacement in this segment. The rule didn’t apply to option packages, so Pontiac dropped a 389-cubic-inch V8 into the Tempest and offered it at an extra cost. Sales started in 1964, and the GTO was made a standalone model in 1966. The nameplate finally retired in 2006. Power comes from a 389-cubic-inch Tri-Power V8, rated at about 330 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.
